When: March 15, 2002
Where: Outside Phoenix, Arizona
What: driving alongside desert mountains, huge cacti and general stores
The Apache Trail (AZ 88) is right outside Phoenix, Arizona and connects Apache Junction to Globe, a small former copper mining town. Driving through the Superstition Mountains, the scenery consists of saguaro cactus and other desert plants. The saguaro cactus can grow up to 50 feet, although some grow to about 15 feet. Their signature look include green arms raised upward.

The extremely dry air caused us to bring a lot of bottled water. Never have I ever been in such a dry place. After going by Canyon Lake, the road leads to Tortilla Flat, where we bought some Cactus Ice Cream from the local store, which looks like an old western general store. It tasted like lime. The trail then leads along Apache Lake until reaching Theodore Roosevelt Lake formed by the Theodore Roosevelt Dam. A few miles south east along Theodore Roosevelt Lake off a side road are cliff dwellings of the Tonto National Monument.

Driving back along US 60 towards Apache Junction where we started, the sun sets in the dry Arizona sky. We were glad to be on flat land again.
