The Ice Palace Arena in Tampa, Florida resonated with rock songs last Friday, as U2 played their second-to-last show of the North American Elevation Tour. When my date and I got there a few songs into the concert, we thought we had missed the show. But we hadn't. What we did see was really well done rock, lighting and stage presence. "Where the Streets Have No Name" was played with jamming, echoing, loud-as-you-can guitars accompanied by the booming voice of Bono (despite a sore throat). Bono paused his singing during "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" for the audience to sing along. During Pride (In the Name of Love), two screens behind the band showed Martin Luther King giving a speech. For the first encore, "Bullet the Blue Sky," "What's Going On" and "New York" were played very well. (A audience member within the lighted heart walk at the front of the stage handed Bono a I (heart) New York shirt, which he put over his shirt during the "New York" encore). Their second encore included "One" and "Walk On" (Introduced by "Peace on Earth"). "One" and "Peace on Earth" were both accompanied by a huge horizontal screen behind the band, scrolling the many names of the victims of the September 11 attacks. On a blue screen, the white names of the victims of the flights, the NYPD and the FDNY scrolled up the screen and then shone across the audience. This moving, emotional tribute to the victims was an awe-inspiring second encore to a rockin' show. Seeing U2 live is an experience any rock fan should strive to see.
