| The Killers rocked the Masquerede in Ybor City, Florida in one of the loudest shows I have ever seen. Only a few rows of people back, standing in the smaller venue that often hosts smaller acts, the Killers opened up with "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," which is also their debut album Hot Fuss' first song. Lead singer Brandon Flowers played the synthesizer and the opening of "On Top" was the best part regarding the New Wave sounds of the synthesizer. Of course they played their first two singles, "Somebody Told Me," and the jealousy-ridden "Mr. Brightside." A few slower pieces included "Andy You're a Star" and a track not included on the debut album, "Indie Rock & Roll." Flowers had an intense and earnest stage presence, juxtaposed by the laid-back guitarist David Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer. Ronnie Vannucci's drumming was syncopated, fast-paced goodness that made the performance even more enjoyable. One of the opening band, The Zutons, from Liverpool England, were amazing as well. The bassist, guitarist, drummer, the lead singer who also played guitar and played this melonica, like a huge harmonica with piano keys on the side, all rocked in a happy-go-lucky stage presence remiscient of folksy jam bands. The female saxophonist kept jamming and jumping; she resembled Janis Joplin or some hippy rockin out when she was not playing. They had sort of a hippy, folk, rock, world funk sound. |
